Discover one of the biggest life traps young people fall into (and how to avoid it)

SafePoint Talk Pavel Šimek 11/25/2025

The quality of your life's journey doesn't depend on the destination, but on who you're walking it with.

Everyone wants to live a good life. To find direction, meaning, relationships that bring joy, and the feeling that they're walking in the right direction. And yet so many young people feel confused, uncertain, lonely, or under the pressure of everyone's expectations. We often think the biggest problem is questions like "Where am I going?", "What should I study?", "Who should I become?" But the real trap lies elsewhere. The biggest mistake is often not that you don't know where you'll be in 5 years — it's who you're walking through life with today.

You can have the perfect plan, but if you walk the road with someone who drags you down, you can end up very far from where you were originally headed. And the reverse is true too: you don't need a clear plan, but if you walk with people who encourage you and point you toward truth and goodness, you can end up going much further than you ever imagined.

When you walk the road with the wrong people

There's a difference between the people we choose and the people we don't. We don't choose our parents, and we don't choose our siblings either. But friends, community, and eventually a partner — those are choices. And that's exactly where the invisible life trap begins.

You might know how this goes:

You meet someone charming. Friends who are fun to be around. A group of people you feel accepted by. And then, slowly, without even noticing, you start absorbing their values, their way of thinking, their attitudes toward life. It's not magic — it's just basic human psychology. The Bible puts it simply: you become like the people you spend your time with.

That can be a blessing — or a disaster. If you spend time with people who mock values, direction, or faith... you'll soon start questioning things that used to feel solid. And if you're around people who shape you negatively — draining your emotions, undermining your integrity, keeping you dependent on their opinion — then it doesn't matter how big your goal is. You'll never actually reach it.

The four most common life traps

Four typical traps can lead us astray when choosing the people around us: emotions, peer pressure, fear of being alone, and the belief that the other person will change because of us.

Emotions — sometimes they act like fog. You feel infatuated or bonded in a strong friendship, and you overlook the warning signs.

Peer pressure — you do things "to look good," to earn other people's approval.

Fear of being alone — you'd rather be with someone difficult than be by yourself.

The belief that you'll change the other person — one of the most painful illusions there is.

These traps aren't a sign of weakness. They're simply human. But it's important to know them. Because they're often how we get stuck in relationships that don't help us grow, but hold us back.

How to recognize healthy relationships and environments

The talk made an important point about religious communities: not every place where people smile, hug, and pray is automatically safe. Some environments look beautiful but are actually slowly stripping people of their freedom.

And on the other hand — a healthy community can be recognized by freedom, joy, truthfulness, and authenticity.

You can be yourself in it.

You can bring your doubts.

You can say "I disagree."

You can admit a mistake.

That's the big difference between an environment that strengthens you and one that controls you.

Who walks beside you when you don't understand the road

In the story of the road to Emmaus, there are two people who are broken, disappointed, and lost. And Jesus simply, quietly joins them and walks with them — no fanfare, no manipulation, no pressure. And for a while, they don't even recognize Him. They just sense that something is happening — that their hearts are gradually burning within them, that they're gaining understanding and hope.

And the exact same thing can happen to you. Jesus doesn't change your road by removing the obstacles — He changes it by walking with you.

You might be going through a season where you don't know what you want. Where you're searching for faith. Where you don't know how to pray. Or where you feel like your life has no clear direction. In moments like that, you don't have to be perfect. You don't have to be free of doubt. It's enough that you're not alone. Because a person can lose human love, but not God's love. This isn't theory. It's the life experience of someone who knows you can get through hard times, as long as you're not alone.

Conclusion

Maybe today you're asking: "Where should I go?"

But the more important question is: "Who should I go with?"

The destination isn't what matters most. It's not your career, money, image, or followers. What matters most is who's walking the road with you. Because the person walking beside you can transform the entire journey — even one full of obstacles. And if you choose well — both people and God — you'll find that your road is far more beautiful than you ever expected.
