Success can destroy you if you forget this one single thing

You know that feeling when everything finally starts going right? You're grinding, making progress, recognition comes, money comes, maybe even the thing you used to only dream about. And yet somewhere inside, you feel empty. As if that joy can't quite fill you up. Maybe you're right where Moses was, when he heard God say: 'You can have everything you want. But I will not go with you.'

This story from the book of Exodus isn't just about the ancient Israelites. The promised land without God's presence

The Israelites were offered a dream. They were going to get freedom, safety, a home. But God tells them something chilling: 'I will send an angel ahead of you, I will drive out your enemies, but I will not go with you.' In other words — you can have the blessing, but without Me. Moses responds with words that change everything: 'If your presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.'

That's an absolutely pivotal statement. What Moses is saying is: I don't want everything if You're not in it. I'd rather be in the desert with You than in paradise without You. That's the posture of someone who has understood that real success isn't about results, but about God's closeness.

And this is exactly where we often fall. When things start going well for us, we stop seeking God's presence. We start thinking we can handle it ourselves. But at that point, the miracle turns into an idol. What was meant to be a gift becomes a substitute for God.

When a gift becomes an idol

Success itself isn't bad. God wants us to do well. But the problem is when success becomes the center of our world. When we start praying less because "we've got it handled now." When our faith gets lost in a calendar full of plans and performance. And God, instead of being the main character of our story, becomes just background.

Even God's gifts can be lived out without God. And that's when they lose their meaning. Because anything good loses its flavor if He's not in it. You can have the relationship, the career, the success, but if God's presence is missing from it, you'll keep feeling like something's missing. And that "something" is Him.

God's presence in the middle of imperfection

Moses didn't just want God to go with them. He wanted to see Him. He asked: 'God, show me your glory.' And God placed him in a cleft in the rock. In Hebrew, the word translates as "crevice" or "wound." It's exactly there, in that crack, that Moses encounters God.

It's a profound symbol. God doesn't reveal Himself in perfection, but in wounds. God's presence shows up most in our fragility. Where we're wounded, where we're weak, where we feel like we're failing — that's where God draws near. He's not far away when you're suffering. He's close when it hurts. It's exactly in the places we'd most like to cover up that you can experience His touch.

When God stays, even as everything else fades

Maybe you've thought God is here to help you reach success — your version of the promised land, where everything finally works. But the truth is different. God shapes you on the journey. Miracles often happen in the desert, not in paradise. In the desert, you learn to trust, because you have nothing else. Where your strength runs out, that's where room for His power begins.

And maybe that's exactly why God sometimes doesn't rush your success. Not because He doesn't want you to have it, but because He wants you to learn that His presence is worth more than the outcome. Because success without God turns bitter. In the land flowing with milk and honey, even milk can go sour and honey can get sticky. Everything that was meant to be beautiful turns to emptiness without Him.

God in your cracks

When God showed Moses His glory, He told him he could only see His "back" — as much as he could handle. That's a picture of God's gentleness. God knows how much you can handle, and He will never load more onto you than you can bear. He doesn't remove your problems, but He carries you through them. He's the one who lifts you up when you can't go on. Just like Sam carried Frodo in The Lord of the Rings — because when Frodo couldn't carry the Ring anymore, Sam could carry him.

And so you too can experience God carrying you. Not because He solves everything for you, but because He won't leave you in the middle of the confusion. Where your strength ends, His begins.

Real success

The promised land isn't a place. It's a state of the heart that says: 'God, wherever You go, I'll go too.' That's success you can never lose. That's a victory that won't vanish even if you fall. That's an assurance that won't leave you empty, even when everything around you falls apart.

And maybe right now God is waiting for you to stop. To admit that you don't want to keep going without Him anymore. Because this is the one thing you must not forget: Without God's presence, even the greatest success loses its meaning. But with Him, even your weakness can become a miracle.
