The biggest spiritual blindness we suffer from today (and how to get out of it)

SafePoint Talk Pavel Šimek 10/9/2025

Stop, let go of the past, and start seeing your life the way God sees it.

No one will tell you this: the biggest spiritual blindness we suffer from today (and how to get out of it)

Imagine waking up and it's dark. Not the kind of morning dark before the sun rises. Darkness that never lifts. You open your eyes, but you see nothing. No faces, no colors, no world around you. Just emptiness. That was the whole life of Bartimaeus, a man from the Bible. He was blind from birth. He sat by the road and begged, because that was the only thing he could do. He depended on the mercy of passersby, and his world had shrunk to a few steps around him.

You might think this has nothing to do with you. You can see, after all. But the truth is different. We too can be blind — not in our eyes, but in our hearts. We see screens, social media, school presentations, ads, but we don't see what's actually important. We don't see God. We don't see the meaning of our lives. And often we don't even see ourselves the way he sees us. This is spiritual blindness — and it affects every one of us.

Children of the King who beg

Bartimaeus's name means "son of the honored one." And yet he sat in the dust by the road, begging for coins. He was a king's son living like a beggar. And that's exactly how we often live too. God created us as his children, as people of immense worth. But instead we try to prove that we matter. We look for confirmation of our worth in other people's eyes. We count likes, we compare ourselves to others, we look for meaning in career, success, or relationships. And when we don't have it, we feel worthless.

Maybe someone has told you your whole life that you're not good enough. Maybe you've convinced yourself that you'll never accomplish anything. But this isn't your true identity. God has named you "my son" and "my daughter." You are not the labels people have stuck on you. You are not what you've done or failed to do. Your worth isn't conditional on what you have, but on who created you.

When the world says "Be quiet"

Bartimaeus heard that Jesus was passing by, and he started shouting: "Jesus, have mercy on me!" And what did the people around him do? They told him off. "Be quiet, don't be a nuisance." You might know that feeling. You sense that God is calling you closer to himself, but the people around you pull you back. "Don't take it too far." "Faith is for the weak." "Nobody cares about God today."

But Bartimaeus wouldn't be silenced. He shouted even louder. And that's exactly what faith is — not giving up, even when others laugh at you. Not staying seated in the dust just because someone tries to talk you out of it. Sometimes it takes courage to be different from who the world wants you to be. Courage to look for more than just a comfortable life.

A God who stops for one person

Jesus was headed to Jerusalem, where the cross awaited him. But even so, he stopped for one blind beggar. The crowd kept moving, but Jesus stopped. People overlooked Bartimaeus, but Jesus heard him. And that's the key truth: God sees you even when you feel invisible. He hears you, even when your voice gets lost in the noise of the world. And he says the same thing to you that he said to Bartimaeus back then: "Get up, I'm calling you."

This is something we need to remind ourselves of often. God isn't far away. He isn't waiting for you to become perfect. He doesn't ask you to solve all your problems first. He comes to where you are — even if you're sitting by the road with no idea where to go next. And he calls you by name.

Drop your cloak

When Bartimaeus heard Jesus calling him, he threw off his cloak and ran to him. That cloak was his only possession, his security. It protected him from the cold, and people threw coins into it. But Bartimaeus was willing to let it go so he could go to Jesus. And that's the essence of faith — letting go of the things you rely on, and trusting God.

What's your "cloak"? Maybe it's your fear of failing. Maybe it's your comfort, or your idea of how your life should look. Maybe it's your dependence on what other people think of you. If you want to see more, you have to be willing to let something go. God offers you something bigger, but he won't force it on you if you keep clinging to your old way of life.

The best prayer: "Let me see"

When Bartimaeus came to Jesus, Jesus asked him: "What do you want me to do for you?" Bartimaeus didn't say: "Give me money." He didn't say: "Make me famous." He just said: "Lord, let me see." That's the deepest and most honest prayer you can pray too. Let me see the truth about myself. Let me see who you are. Let me see the people around me through your eyes.

Many people spend their lives asking for more money, more success, more comfort. But the biggest change doesn't come from getting more things. It comes when you start seeing differently. Because when you see God, everything else starts falling into place.

The free choice to follow

Jesus healed Bartimaeus and told him: "Go." He didn't give him orders or conditions. He gave him freedom. And Bartimaeus chose to follow him. Not out of obligation, but out of love. Not because he had to, but because he wanted to. And that's real faith. Not restrictive rules, but the free choice to follow someone who opened your eyes.

Every one of us is like Bartimaeus. We have our blind spots, our cloaks, our dusty place by the road. But the good news is that Jesus is still passing by today. And he's asking you: "What do you want me to do for you?" Maybe it's time to say for the first time: "Jesus, have mercy on me." And maybe it's time to say once again: "Lord, let me see."

Because once you truly see, you'll never stay sitting in the dust again. You'll set out on the journey — not because you have to, but because you want to. Because you've finally understood who you are and where you belong. And that's the way out of spiritual blindness.
